Ruth Estévez and Lumi Tan discuss performances that have shaped their vision of the medium and the impact that performance has had on their practices.
Ruth Estévez is a curator and artistic director, joining Skowhegan in 2025 as Director of its residency program. Previously Artistic Director at Amant in Brooklyn, she has also held roles at the Rose Art Museum and REDCAT in Los Angeles. Estévez has curated major exhibitions like the 34th São Paulo Biennial and The Words of Others for The Getty’s Pacific Standard Time initiative. She founded LIGA, Space for Architecture in Mexico City, and has taught at institutions including Universidad Iberoamericana and MICA.
Lumi Tan is a curator and writer based in New York. She served as Senior Curator at The Kitchen from 2011 to 2023, where she organized exhibitions and performances with artists like Sondra Perry, Kevin Beasley, and Anicka Yi. Previously, she held curatorial roles at MoMA PS1, Luna Luna, FRAC Nord Pas de Calais, and Zach Feuer Gallery. Tan has also contributed writing to publications such as Artforum, Frieze, and Mousse. She has been a visiting critic and lecturer at institutions like Yale University, Bard College, and Columbia University.
